2022 in Review
• Category: PersonalAnother year! This one went by so quickly, in no small part due to a new member of the family.
Things I learned
- Having a set routine for the day is underrated
- Using formula and having a baby that sleeps through the night seem to prevent 90% of infant parenting stress.
- Snap closures for baby clothes are the worst.
- Baby wearing is awesome.
- Compostable diaper services actually work pretty well.
- There’s nothing better than hearing a baby laugh for the first time.
- Throat Coat Tea really does soothe a sore throat.
- I greatly prefer split, ortholinear, concave keyboards. There aren’t many!
- Debugging declarative configurations like Terraform just turn into slow imperative programming.
- The only Google-born software tool that I enjoy using is Go. Everything else has a terrible developer experience.
- Internal software platform teams should focus on composable building blocks. It’s the only way to keep up with a growing and changing business.
- When cooking with carbon steel (pan or wok), it’s important to really heat up the pan before adding oil or other foods.
- On the other hand, baking bread starting with a cold oven gives better oven spring.
- Beef sausage is not an adequate substitute for pork sausage in New Orleans-style red beans and rice.
- You can never have too much kitchen freezer space.
- You can never have too much frozen, backup New York-style cheesecake.

- The Expanse, by James S.A. Corey
- The Ten Thousand Doors of January, by Alix Harrow
- City of Stairs, by Robert Jackson Bennett
- The Mask of Mirrors, by M.A. Carrick
- How to Keep House While Drowning, by K.C. Davis

- In the Mood for Love (film)
- Turning Red (film)
- Fargo (film)
- Tokyo Godfathers (film)
